The Brookings County/City of Brookings Joint Board of Adjustment (Board) recently granted a conditional use permit for the construction of the Brookings Solar Project, which is being developed by MRES. This approval marks a significant milestone in the ongoing efforts of MRES to expand its energy generation portfolio, enhance grid reliability and support renewable energy initiatives.
The conditional use permit allows MRES to move forward with plans to construct a 5-megawatt solar facility near the MRES member community of Brookings, South Dakota. This project will generate enough energy to power approximately 1,100 homes annually.
The project is being financed through the Western Minnesota Municipal Power Agency, which finances the construction and acquisition of the generation and transmission facilities for members of MRES.
“We are grateful to the Board for their careful review and approval of the Brookings Solar Project,” said MRES President and CEO Matt Schull. “This project aligns with our mission to deliver reliable and affordable energy to our members while contributing to the region’s long-term sustainability.”
MRES will continue working closely with local officials, regulators and community stakeholders to ensure the project progresses smoothly. Construction is scheduled to begin later this fall, with completion anticipated by late 2025.
